Bees

Beekeeping once played an important role in agricultural self-sufficiency. As well as being a sweetener, honey was considered an important remedy. An apiary was therefore an integral part of many farms. Two historic apiaries have been translocated to the Glentleiten Open Air Museum: buildings no. 13c and no. 25.

Along with honey extraction and other valuable bee products, the honey bees’ pollination activities are very important for the natural world. They help to maintain the continuation of numerous wild and ornamental plants, thereby securing the nutritional basis for other organisms.
