Bavarian Domestic Geese

The two types of goose breeds in Bavaria were the laying goose, which lays approximately 40 eggs a year, and the sitting goose. The Bavarian domestic goose is a sitting goose. These robust and modest birds were kept for their meat. Their colour ranged from pure white to grey, blue, brown or spotted with all colour variations.

These birds lay only 10 to 13 eggs a year, which they incubate themselves. They raise their goslings reliably, with active participation from the gander (male goose).

The number of small-scale breeders decreased sharply in the 1950s. There are only around 40 small-scale breeders in Germany today.
