The Flower Ladies of the Viktualienmarkt

Photographic Works by Hildegard Kaup (1924-2016)

The focal point of the exhibition is a series of black and white pictures which show the work of the Viktualienmarkt flower ladies in an impressive light. The images were taken in the immediate post-war era, in the years 1948-1949.

Photographer Hildegaard Kaup came from Geseke in the district of Soest. She spent a year studying in Munich to complete her training, at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Lichtbildwesen, then the Bavarian State School of Photography, after which she returned home. Her parents ran a photography studio there, and this was where she worked thenceforth.

In addition to the work of the flower ladies, incidentally quite a distance from the Viktualienmarkt, the special exhibition is devoted to the life and further works of Hildegaard Kaup.

The exhibition was developed by our colleagues at the open-air museum LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold.
