The “Whetstone workshop” building group consists of the grinding and sanding hut, a hewing hut and an earth storage cellar. Whetstone has been produced in Unterammergau, Ohlstadt, Pessenbach near Kochel, Buching and Schwangau from the hard limestone deposits in the region since the 16th century. Production in Unterammergau always exceeded regional demand. The whetstone, required in farming to sharpen scythes and sickles, was sold on a collective basis and exported as far as the Danube states.
